The project
As a kid I wanted a real Pokédex. So I built one: six generations, 719 entries, each with its stats, weaknesses, evolution curve and catch locations.
The sheer volume of data called for an embedded SQLite database and hand-written queries, so browsing stayed instant on the iPhones of the day. The app lived for ten years, from 2009 to 2019, following each new generation and each new device, all the way to the Apple Watch.
What the app did
- A detailed sheet for every Pokémon: stats, weaknesses, abilities, forms, egg groups and catch locations
- Every item and every move in the game
- Tracking of the Pokémon you had already caught
- An Apple Watch companion
719 Pokémon across six generations, with animated 3D Mega Evolutions. "Dexter" feature: a voice reads each Pokémon's description on tap.
