The project
In 2010, a concert was still lived with your screen held high. Concert Box turned the iPhone into a venue accessory: a virtual lighter whose flame tilts as you tip the device, a torch driven by the iPhone 4's real flash, an animated "LED" display to find each other in the crowd, and ambient sounds triggered by shaking the phone.
All of it rested on the phone's own components, repurposed one by one: the accelerometer for tilt and shake, the flash for light. It is the project that taught me the most about what a device's hardware can be made to say.
